Being a Woman in the Zombie Apocalypse

Being a Woman in the Zombie Apocalypse

Each day, women spend quite a bit of time fixing their hair and makeup, trying to look perfect. We worry about our legs being shaved, especially in the summertime. Some of us check the mirrors more than others to make sure their eyebrows didn’t wipe off or their eyeliner didn’t smudge halfway down their face. It’s certainly not always easy to be a woman.

But, what if we were in the middle of the zombie apocalypse…

Let’s look at The Walking Dead for an example. Yes, it’s only a TV show, but where the heck would a women find a razor in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by flesh eating zombies? Having hairy legs wouldn’t be the worst of it. How about deodorant, or tampons?

Anyway, it’s summer and the sun is beating down on your face. You cut your jeans into shorts, because the heat is too much to handle. You have a spaghetti strap tank top on and you haven’t shaved for three months. It’s like eighty degrees out, you sure the heck aren’t wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt to cover up the jungle that was once your legs. So you’re pretty much just a walking disaster, almost as bad as the zombies…

Yes, it would be so embarrassing, but in the moment of having zombies coming for you, wanting to eat your flesh and suck down your blood, I’m pretty sure that your forest legs and pale face wouldn’t be the first thing in your mind. You would have to turn into a kick ass warrior like Carol, or bash zombie’s heads in while being pregnant like Maggie, or even learn how to use a sword like Michonne.

The little things wouldn’t matter anymore. Everyone will soon forget what a razor even is, unless you’re lucky enough to be confined in a place like Alexandria, and then you would be worrying about running out of the essentials. Your first thought would be surviving. You’ll be too busy searching for clean water and food and safe shelter, rather than if your legs are shaved or checking a mirror to see if your lipstick is still intact.

So kudos to the woman of The Walking Dead! Not only are they inspiring from their transformation from every day woman to warriors, but they show us that no matter what the situation a strong woman can adapt. Zombies are no match for us!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Every year we celebrate St. Patrick's Day with things like green beer, corned beef, and parades. When I was little my family went to the local parade every year. We had a great time but my favorite part was always watching the step dancers. Most of the things we in the US relate to St. Patrick's Day do not really have anything to do with the man it is  named for though so I thought we'd explore a few of the more popular legends of the Saint.
Picture
The first is that Ireland is now free of snakes because St. Patrick banished them. The second is the legend of the shamrock. You see St. Patrick was sent to Ireland but he Catholic church to convert the last of the pagan hold outs and both of these legends suited the church's purpose.  Most historians agree that Ireland probably never had snakes and since Christianity and Paganism both have snakes as symbolic figures, one good and one evil, it worked to the church's purpose for a saint to have banished snakes, and therefore evil, from the land.
The Shamrock was a little bit different. It served as a talisman of sorts. Stories say that St. Patrick used the three part Shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to those he was trying to convert. Each piece of the Shamrock was depicted as either the father, the son to the holy spirit and yet was one being, just as the Holy trinity is three parts of one being.
